This past weekend I was able to goof off a bit and, make a little blackberry jelly in the process. I also made some beautiful Italian Bread, but that is another story.
I may be a bit cheesy, but I like the recipe on the Sure-Jell box for making jelly and jam. This year, for the first time in a very long time, I made jelly, because the seeds are getting a little more difficult to deal with. For those of you who have found themselves 'long of tooth,' as we are rapidly becoming, understand this plight.
Having the proper equipment makes it all a snap, from a nice big pot in which to cook the berries so the juice will run free, to the fruit straining bag to squeeze out said juice but leave the seed behind. We are jelly-hounds, if the truth be told, so we use pint jars, which aren't quite as fanciful as the half-pint decorative jars.
If you get a chance to get out and pick some berries, be sure to make a lovely cobbler while the berries are at their peak! A lovely slice of cobbler with a side of vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped sweet cream is a decadence like no other. Now, where's that hot cup of freshly brewed coffee. My oh my, I do love summer and its bounty.
